How to find HP Compaq nc6000 recovery discs

If you don’t care to read the path I took for find the CDs, go to the bottom.

I searched and searched on Google looking for HP Compaq nc6000 recovery DVDs or CDs.  I couldn’t find anything on HP’s website about them, or even the part number.  I found 3rd party sites selling the discs, but only one had the one for this model and it was going to be hundreds of dollars.

I used a Windows XP Professional SP2 CD from an older HP laptop, but it would give an error saying there was no hard drive present:

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447626+1287021157510+28353475&threadId=1089060

Then I followed the direction of putting the SATA drivers on a diskette, which was an ordeal, but I did it (with an old NIC driver diskette and a D620 floppy drive w/USB cable).  Then, after loading the SATA driver diskette, it asked me “insert the disk labeled Windows XP Professional Edition CD-ROM into Drive A:”   I couldn’t get it to do anything after that point.

So, I went searching again the next day.  I finally stumbled upon this, which was what I wish I found the first time, it was perfect.  Hopefully this is high on Google and saves you time and headaches:

…you can order a set of restore disks for your nc6400 from HP if you live in the USA. I ordered some in January. Cost me $10.00 for shipping.1. Write down the part number and serial # on the bottom of the computer on the white tag. The model # is an HP-Compaq nc6400, but the part number will be found on that white tag below the serial #.

2. Call HP at 1-800-952-7689, option 1 (ordering restore disks is part of the list in the option).

3. Provide the info asked by the rep that answers the phone. Some just ask for the serial #, some want both, or they will just want the serial number and type of computer (nc6400).

4. Have a Master Card or Visa ready for purchasing. They don’t take Discover. I believe you will be charged $10.00.

You will receive the disks by First Class Mail or you can pay an additional $10.00 for FedEx shipping.

[SOLUTION] Outlook 2000 opens, then closes; won’t stay open!

My Outlook 2000 would not stay open today!  I would open it, but it would immediately disappear and close.  Each time I open it, it keeps closing. I found the reason, which is iTunes 10, and the solution which did work for me:

iTunes will sync with Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010. If you use Microsoft Outlook 2000, you can resolve this issue by renaming the “OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll” file. This file can be renamed however you choose, and is found in the following default location depending on your operating system:

* Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit) or Windows 7 (32-bit):
o C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll
* Windows Vista (64-bit) or Windows 7 (64-bit):
o C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll

If you install Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010 after renaming this file, you may need to reinstall iTunes 10 before being able to sync Contacts, Calendars, email account information, or Notes.

I renamed it OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn – problem file.dll

For those of you having difficulty finding the file, find a find to get to the C: drive.  For Windows XP, it is My Computer.  For Vista or Windows 7, look for “Computer”.  Once you find C: and double-click it, double-click the Program Files folder (for 32-bit systems), and so on, following the paths listed above.  Searching for the file will probably be tough to make work.

[UPDATE 10/1/10] I just updated to iTunes 10.0.1 and it happened all over again!  The fix worked again…

[SOLUTION] iTunes 10 – Windows installer has set policies to prevent installation

I was working with a client that couldn’t install iTunes 10 today on Vista Home Premium SP2.  It would pop up a message early in the install process saying, “Windows installer has set policies to prevent installation.”

I visited this blog, which had good advice, but none of it worked.

However, in the comments of that blog, sunny wrote that right-clicking and clicking “Run as Administrator” on the iTunes installation file worked.  It worked for me, too.

[MAJOR PROBLEM] DCOM service process launcher terminated unexpectedly

McAfee DAT file 5958 is caused a false positive in SVCHOST.EXE, it is thinking it is W32/WECORL.A.  Disabling McAfee will stop this rebooting.Чесотка

Hit START > RUN > SHUTDOWN -A, hit Enter to stop the DCOM shutdown window.  Many things won’t work at this point.

Make a backup copy of Dell’s Windows 7 Professional OEM DVD

I always like to have backup copies of my Dell Windows’ CDs and DVDs for service reason, but I couldn’t get the Dell Windows 7 Professional 32-bit DVD to copy, it would say that my DVD+R didn’t have sufficient space.  I saw that the Dell DVD was 4.8GB, so I bought a pack of  DVD+R Dual Layer discs and it worked!  Make sure your drive and software can handle dual layer discs.

[SOLUTION] Failed – Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

After scouring the internet I found a solution for my computer’s inability to update the Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892) (Update failed).

Click Start, Run, type “regedit”

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup

Double-click on Resume, change the number from 1 to 0 (zero).

Try to install now.  It worked for me.

Listen live to Steelers games on your iPhone or iPad

I spent over an hour on Sunday trying to figure out how to listen to the broadcast of the Pittsburgh Steelers game on my iPhone while out of state.  Here is a list of stations I found if on a regular computer:

http://www.freefootballradio.com/Pittsburgh.html

However, none of these worked with the iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad).  However, I found an app that included a live stream of an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Network, WTPA.

[UPDATE 12/5/10] I just found an app that has three Steelers affiliates.  It’s called TuneIn Radio and it’s only $1.99 as of 12/5/2010:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunein-radio/id319295332?mt=8

I hit Browse and searched for Steelers to find the stations, although some preempt the coverage.  These are the three I found that work:

  1. WTPA (Mechanicsburg, PA)
  2. Q-102 (Altoona, PA)
  3. Classic Hits 103.9 (Columbus, OH)

This app is very user friendly and has nice DVR-type features for pausing and rewinding.

[FROM 10/2009]:

The app found in Apple’s iTunes Store is ooTunes ($4.99 as of 10/2009):

http://ootunes.com/app/

Once I installed the app, I opened the ooTunes app, searched for WTPA and listened to the rest of the game on 3G and EDGE.  Enjoy!

If you have another cheaper or free way to listen, comment here! Please also comment below if this worked for you.

ProSeries 2008 won’t open – SOLUTION

I didn’t find this on the internet, so I figured I would put it here.  This may be isolated, but if not, let me know if this helps.  I got a call from an accountant saying that all of a sudden Intuit’s ProSeries 2008 would freeze when opening.Dekor okno

After lots of questioning, I found that she had installed Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) that week.  She uninstalled IE8 and ProSeries worked fine.

Can’t open Outlook with QuickBooks open – SOLUTION

After upgrading from QuickBooks 2006 to 2008 (stupid Intuit), I wanted to synchronize my contacts from QuickBooks to Outlook 2000 like I’ve always done.  When I tried, it made me download a sync application and install it (the 2006 version had a small, built-in sync program).  I had to close Outlook for it to install, but when I went to open Outlook, it wouldn’t open.  I finally uninstalled the sync app and closed all my programs and then Outlook opened.  That scared me…

Then I noticed other things..  If I tried to use a right-click Sent To – Mail Recipient or a built-in email function, it wouldn’t work.  Many times I couldn’t get my Outlook to open again, even with the sync app gone.  I finally figured out that with QuickBooks 2008 open, Outlook won’t open and many of it’s functions are messed up.  There aren’t any add-ins for QB in Outlook.

I finally figured out the solution: Edit menu, Preferences, Send Forms, My Preferences tab, change “Send E-mail Using” to QuickBooks E-mail from Outlook.  This will disentangle the programs.  Errr.

FIX! Generic Host Process for win32 Services szModName: ntdll.dll

I worked on a computer today that would pop the Generic Host Process for win32 Services error with the szModName: ntdll.dll.  I did trial and error in the MSCONFIG application and found that if I uncheck Terminal Services on the Services tab, the problem disappeared.  This user will never need to use any built-in remote support features, so I tally this one as fixed..Омоложение сада, омоложение растений в саду

STEPS:

Click Start, Run, type msconfig, click Services tab, uncheck Terminal Services, click OK, reboot and see what happens.
