Listen live to Steelers games on your iPhone or iPad

I spent over an hour on Sunday trying to figure out how to listen to the broadcast of the Pittsburgh Steelers game on my iPhone while out of state.  Here is a list of stations I found if on a regular computer:

http://www.freefootballradio.com/Pittsburgh.html

However, none of these worked with the iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad).  However, I found an app that included a live stream of an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Network, WTPA.

[UPDATE 12/5/10] I just found an app that has three Steelers affiliates.  It’s called TuneIn Radio and it’s only $1.99 as of 12/5/2010:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunein-radio/id319295332?mt=8

I hit Browse and searched for Steelers to find the stations, although some preempt the coverage.  These are the three I found that work:

  1. WTPA (Mechanicsburg, PA)
  2. Q-102 (Altoona, PA)
  3. Classic Hits 103.9 (Columbus, OH)

This app is very user friendly and has nice DVR-type features for pausing and rewinding.

[FROM 10/2009]:

The app found in Apple’s iTunes Store is ooTunes ($4.99 as of 10/2009):

Once I installed the app, I opened the ooTunes app, searched for WTPA and listened to the rest of the game on 3G and EDGE.  Enjoy!

If you have another cheaper or free way to listen, comment here! Please also comment below if this worked for you.

I see that is for Android. I installed the iheartradio app on my iPhone during Sunday’s Steelers game, and WDVE’s feed was music, not the game. That’s why I dug hard to find WTPA on ooTunes. Maybe it is different on Android, but I doubt it.

WTPA is not an option to listen to Steelers games on the iPhone because it requires MS Silverlight to be downloaded, which cannot be done (that I know of anyway). That was a waste of $5.

Maybe I needed to be more careful in my instructions. I rewritten this sentence:

“Once I installed the app, I searched to WTPA and listened to the rest of the game on 3G and EDGE. Enjoy!”
    to

“Once I installed the app, I opened the ooTunes app, searched for WTPA and listened to the rest of the game on 3G and EDGE. Enjoy!”

Please let me know here if that worked. I successfully listened to the game yesterday.

iheart radio works, but it is a full minute delayed. Not ideal for watching a live event??
    Any other suggestions for iphone?

What do you mean, iheart with WTPA? I found that WDVE doesn’t broadcast the Steelers game in iheart. You’re going to need to use FM radio locally for a synced broadcast. I think they actually delay the WTAE broadcast slightly each week depending on the satellite delay to match up perfectly.
