DECORATION ART, LLC fraud charge

DECORATION ART, LLC 904-2635578 FL

On another blog post asking folks to comment about small dollar fraud charges, scores of comments were left about Decoration Art, LLC.  My first report was by Stacie on Sep 22, 2010. Comment here is it hit you!

Here’s their BBB report:

http://www.bbb.org/north-east-florida/business-reviews/internet-services/the-screen-art-in-jacksonville-fl-4452798/

If it’s like other operations I’ve seen in the past, this business owner may be a money mule not knowing that the charges are actually entered (with stolen credit card numbers) by the same bad guys that Mr. Lee wires a cut of the money to.  The owner better be careful, because money mules are a big target of law enforcement. Even though they get such small amounts in, they probably wire amounts just under $10,000 offshore to evade the law.

I’ve gotten my hands on an email from Mr. Lee:

From: Michael Lee
To: xxxxx@sbcglobal.net

Subject: Re: Undocumented Billing Received – response needed

This was on on-line ourchase for a screen saver attach is the purchase receipt, settlement report, and refund policy, the web-site is www.thescreenart.com.

The MO is exactly the same as all these other frauds related to screensavers called DEVBILL:

[SOLUTIONS] load needed DLLs for kernel

Here is the error message:

Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs for kernel. Please contact your support person to report this problem.

What programmer wrote these lines of code??  Could it be any LESS helpful.  I’ll try to shed some light to help.  This post is for professionals and experts, so I didn’t find an easy solution and some methods here are beyond a normal home user.

Some results on Google suggest messing with the MBR and Boot Record, but I suggest waiting to do that until other troubleshooting is completed.

Here is my own troubleshooting method for this problem after dealing with it:

1. Check the motherboard for bad capacitors.  Some reports of users replacing the hard drive, reinstalling Windows and still having the problem (no it’s not a scratched CD!).

a. The best case scenario would be to put swap hard drives with a working second identical computer to see if the problem is something other than the hard drive.

2. Run a chkdsk on the problem computer.  Sorry, I will leave that to you to look up.

3. Hook up the bad hard drive to another computer (or use something like the Ultimate Boot CD) to check the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32  directory for these files plus check their size and version against other computer with the identical OS and Service Pack:

bootvid.dll    (source)  — this was the source of my problem

kdcom.dll      (source)

hal.dll             (source)

ntoskrnl.exe  (source)

Sadly for me, this wasn’t the only missing files, so it was indicative of a loss of a group of files.  This may indicate that you have a failing hard drive. When I replaced bootvid.dll, my computer did boot.

4. Now to more extreme measures.  Microsoft suggests doing an in-place reinstall, which I never liked.  Here are a few links for the things I tried, but wasn’t my root cause:

a. http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/load-needed-dlls-for-kernel/133655.html

b. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061112202439AAwbirg

Please help others by commenting here on what worked for you or other advice I can add.

[SOLUTION] There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office Home & Student Edition 2010

Last week I worked on a computer where the user bought Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 online and downloaded it from Digital River.  He downloaded (on Windows Vista SP2) and ran it, but it gave an error on Step 4 or 4:

There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010: There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office.  Try running Setup again.  If the problem continues, contact Microsoft Product Support.

In most forums online, it pointed to this Microsoft Support page, which wasn’t the problem for my user:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2445957

This does describe the problem perfectly, but it didn’t apply.

Many forums recommended a Clean Boot and uninstalling all Microsoft Office products, but I didn’t feel like this would help.

As I investigated more, I was curious as to what “Microsoft Office Click-to-Run” in the Programs and Features was.  I removed it and ran the installer again.  Now it came up with a different error:

This product must be installed to Q:. Ensure that Q: is unused and try again

Scratching my head, I noticed that the downloaded file (x16-32007.exe) was only a few megabytes, which I thought was very strange.  I searched for help and found this thread:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officeinstall/thread/10c7fed0-d7eb-403c-b03c-6713d9e376e1

This actually was helpful.  NOTE: Most forum commentators blame this error on the Q: being mapped already.  This computer didn’t use Q:, but rather was an error, probably because I removed the Click-to-Run setup.

Here is the answer to the problem quoted from there (thanks Niyamath Khan):

Go to the site where you purchased Office 2010, and sign in with your LiveID. Then click on the “My Account” link at the top of the home page to access your Office downloads. Click on the Download button for the suite you purchased, and then click on the Advanced Options link below the “Download Now” button. There will be a version of Office 2010 listed that is not Click-to-Run and does not require an available Q: drive.

The user went back to digitalriver.com, logged in, and I was able to find the 32-bit full 550MB download.  I had some difficulty getting the huge file to open, but once I did, everything was perfect — no thanks to Digital River pushing my user this silly version.

Gateway GT5412 sound stopped working

I worked on a client’s Gateway GT5412 desktop computer this week where it was not putting out any sound to the speakers.  The first thing I did was to plug the speakers into my iPhone, which resulting in the speakers working fine.  I then put headphones into the rear green jack and just heard the left ear humming.  I tried the front panel, too, but with the same result.бизнес

I found the sound card driver and updated it, restarted, but had the same result.  I didn’t find anyone via Google that had this problem before.

To fix it, I told an old PCI sound card from an old Windows 98 Gateway and put it in the new one.  I disabled the SigmaTel sound chip and Vista was able to find the driver via Windows Update automatically and the sound worked through there.

If you experience the same thing, comment here.

Dell Inspiron 530 restarts unexpectedly

I have a customer with a Dell Inspiron 530 in which the computer will suddenly just restart while in the middle of using it. Multiple times now, the hard drive ends up getting damaged in this process and Vista will not boot. I run chkdsk c: /r from the Advanced recovery tools’ command prompt and it boots, but it still has this shutdown problem. There is no evidence of anything in any of the Event Logs in Windows right before this happens — go it’s not a Blue Screen. I replaced the power supply with a new one from a trusted seller on eBay and gave it back to the client. A few weeks later, the same auto-restart happened, damaged the hard drive and I got it back.Секреты прирожденного продавца. Часть 2

During my subsequent testing, the same thing would happen during a chkdsk outside of windows, so it can’t be a software problem.

Being unsure what to do, I sat on it for a few weeks searching for answers or others with similar problems. I found very little that was helpful, so I’m on my own. Please comment if you have had similar symptoms.

My next step was to buy a case with power supply — an unusual choice. It doesn’t feel to me like this is motherboard, processor, RAM or heat. I’m swapping it today — we’ll see what happens.

[UPDATE 12/8/10]: It has been running continuously in the CMOS menu since Monday night….so far so good.

Letter from Garrison Finley about free airline tickets

Here’s another Leading Incentive Agency! (See other posts here.) Please comment if you received one.

It tells you that you have qualified for an award of 2 roundtrip airline tickets. It looks like it was actually signed by Lynn Hess, the “Vice President of the Travel Awards Division.”

The www.garrisonfinley.com website exists. Here’s the whois info: http://www.whois.net/whois/garrisonfinley.com — registered October 25, 2010.

They hand write the address on the envelope and use a real stamp.

I have found the answers to this mystery thanks to the great work of the folks at BBB in Tucson, AZ:

Letter from US Airlines about free airline tickets

Here’s another mailing about free airline tickets, only instead of coming from a fake incentive company, it is from a fake airline called US Airlines – “Fly the US skies”! (See other posts here.) Please comment if you received one.

They have a variation that includes an award notification and boarding pass.  See below for pictures.

It tells you that you have qualified for an award of 2 roundtrip airline tickets. It looks like it was actually signed by Barbara Dion or Alexia Pitt or Kate White or Loretta Cape or Ann Roy or Charlene James or Angela King or Marcia O’Neal or Janelle Kelly or Candice Bray or Phyllis Neal or Melanie Car or Jessica Clay or Katherine Cota or Christina Jud or Shauna West or Jane Austin or Hillary Baio or Jessica Nish or C.  Ray or Dorothy Wade or Linda Ford or Jade Beal or Nicole Clay or Valerie Fay or Erica Bale or K. Mane or Loretta Pine or Alexis Doug or Kristina Bar or Brittany Hunt or Doris Jack, the “Vice President.” They hand write the address on the envelope and use a real stamp (sometimes!).

Here is the cheesy website for this letter. Once you go to the sales pitch and sign up, you book through a fulfillment company. I’ve seen two lately: Universal Travel Vacations (website, BBB report) or the The Vacation Station (website, BBB report TN, BBB report SC)

I have found the answers to this mystery thanks to the great work of the folks at BBB in Tucson, AZ:

AWARD NOTIFICATION/BOARDING PASS:

Here is what would happen if you did call:

ADVICE:

When I read this, it was just too good not to post.  It’s from the Nebraska Attorney General (page 13 printed/page 15 PDF).

Look for the warning signs that may indicate a scam:

  • Benefits sound too good to be true.
  • The company has no permanent address and all presentations are held in rented conference rooms.
  • They can’t, or won’t, provide you with references.
  • They don’t want to give you an itemized list of what’s included in your trip until you have already signed the contract.

What you should do if you suspect a scam:

  • Don’t sign any contract during the travel presentation. They are high-pressure events intended to stir the emotions of an exotic vacation.
  • Contact a respected travel agent in town, give them the specifics of the trip, and ask if that seems  consistent with industry pricing.
  • Shop around. Compare your trip with other travel packages being offered to seniors.

Here is Michigan’s Attorney General’s advice:

Letter from Foster Simmons about free airline tickets

Here’s another Leading Incentive Agency! (See other posts here.) Please comment if you received one.

It tells you that you have qualified for an award of 2 roundtrip airline tickets. It looks like it was actually signed by Catherine Ray, the “Vice President of the Travel Awards Division.”

The www.fostersimmons.com website exists. Here’s the whois info: http://www.whois.net/whois/fostersimmons.com — registered October 25, 2010.

They hand write the address on the envelope and use a real stamp.
