Dell D620 screen flickers after removing power cord

I sold a Dell Latitude D620 that intermittently would go into a terrible screen flickering or blinking when the power cord was unplugged.  If I inserted the AC adapter, it was fine.  After lots of time and headaches, the answer was to update the display driver.

It had Intel 6.14.10.4764 display driver, which was bad.

I updated it to Intel 6.14.10.4814, which worked.

I recommend going to www.dell.com/support and downloading the newest display driver from there.

[MAJOR PROBLEM] DCOM service process launcher terminated unexpectedly

McAfee DAT file 5958 is caused a false positive in SVCHOST.EXE, it is thinking it is W32/WECORL.A.  Disabling McAfee will stop this rebooting.Чесотка

Hit START > RUN > SHUTDOWN -A, hit Enter to stop the DCOM shutdown window.  Many things won’t work at this point.

Make a backup copy of Dell’s Windows 7 Professional OEM DVD

I always like to have backup copies of my Dell Windows’ CDs and DVDs for service reason, but I couldn’t get the Dell Windows 7 Professional 32-bit DVD to copy, it would say that my DVD+R didn’t have sufficient space.  I saw that the Dell DVD was 4.8GB, so I bought a pack of  DVD+R Dual Layer discs and it worked!  Make sure your drive and software can handle dual layer discs.

[SOLUTION] HP compaq nc6000 wireless not working

I’ve been struggling with this laptop for weeks and finally found a solution.  The nc6000 laptop was donated to the organization that I work for and the user wanted wireless internet.  (Check the bay in the bottom of the laptop to see if a card is there first!)  I bought a card on eBay that was supposed to work for the nc6000 (an intel B2200BG), and the drivers loaded, the Windows wireless icon showed up, but the blue light on the computer wasn’t on and no networks ever showed up, even if I pushed the wireless button. I thought there was a card issue.  (After reading today, only certain mini-PCI cards will work with this model, maybe even just cards with an HP sticker.)  I bought an HP WLAN W500 card, installed it, but had the same exact issue. I installed the Atheros Client Utility thinking that might be required, but it said “wireless network interface disabled.” I dug around the BIOS more (hit F10 immediately after hitting the power button to turn it on) and found that under Security tab, Device Security, there is a choice for Wireless network button and it is set to Disable!  I enabled it, saved the changes and IT WORKS!  Now the wireless button makes the blue light turn on and the wireless works! [SOLUTION] Failed – Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

After scouring the internet I found a solution for my computer’s inability to update the Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892) (Update failed).

Click Start, Run, type “regedit”

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup

Double-click on Resume, change the number from 1 to 0 (zero).

Try to install now.  It worked for me.

Windows XP, Windows 7 and the Future

I have continued to sell Windows XP on new and used systems, with a few exceptions right after Vista was released. I know it so well and can support it really well, and it is compatible with almost everything, so I’m inclined to continue selling it for quite a while. There are two things that I see potentially finally moving the world away from XP to Windows 7:Как штукатурить откосы

Security. Windows XP is just getting hammered right now. The bad guys are really sophistocated and are infecting machines and an incredible pace. I see Microsoft letting XP go and focusing all their resources on securing Windows 7. As Windows XP continues to be as vulnerable as ever, Microsoft will do everything they can to keep the same thing from happening in Windows 7. As users go crazy, they will either find good protection, move to a Mac or Windows 7.

Multitouch. The Apple iPhone and iPod Touch have opened up so many amazing ways to interact with a computer. I see this really catching on and starting to change the post-DOS input world.

Listen live to Steelers games on your iPhone or iPad

I spent over an hour on Sunday trying to figure out how to listen to the broadcast of the Pittsburgh Steelers game on my iPhone while out of state.  Here is a list of stations I found if on a regular computer:

http://www.freefootballradio.com/Pittsburgh.html

However, none of these worked with the iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad).  However, I found an app that included a live stream of an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Network, WTPA.

[UPDATE 12/5/10] I just found an app that has three Steelers affiliates.  It’s called TuneIn Radio and it’s only $1.99 as of 12/5/2010:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunein-radio/id319295332?mt=8

I hit Browse and searched for Steelers to find the stations, although some preempt the coverage.  These are the three I found that work:

  1. WTPA (Mechanicsburg, PA)
  2. Q-102 (Altoona, PA)
  3. Classic Hits 103.9 (Columbus, OH)

This app is very user friendly and has nice DVR-type features for pausing and rewinding.

[FROM 10/2009]:

The app found in Apple’s iTunes Store is ooTunes ($4.99 as of 10/2009):

http://ootunes.com/app/

Once I installed the app, I opened the ooTunes app, searched for WTPA and listened to the rest of the game on 3G and EDGE.  Enjoy!
