Adobe Reader 9 & Reader X print garbage

I’ve dealt with Adobe Reader 9 printing garbled characters/garbage for a few years now with my clients and I’ve never found an actual fix. It is happening with Adobe Reader X as well. My best answer has been to leave the document open until printing is complete and it seems to prevent the problem, but how can this go on for so long on so many computers? I’m talking about multiple computer makes, models, ages, various printers.kahovka-service

Maybe I can get some answers by showing up on Google and working with others! Please comment if you have suggestions.

Webroot Antivirus with Spy Sweeper 2011 makes Vista freeze?

I did work on a computer this morning that was freezing 2-4 times per daily; usually when the screensaver was active.  The freeze was a total screen and mouse freeze, in which the power button needed to be held in.  It is a Dell Inspiron tower with Vista SP2 32-bit.  I looked in the event log and found that the freezing began almost immediately after Webroot Antivirus w/Spy Sweeper updated to version 7 (2011 is the marketing name).inFOLIO Research Group

I uninstalled Webroot and installed Microsoft Security Essentials temporarily to see what happens.  Please comment here if you are having similar experiences.

Autoplay disabled on new Dell Optiplex and Latitude

I’ve noticed that Windows XP autoplay for installation CDs has been disabled on new Dell Optiplex 745 and Latitude D630 and D830 for the last few months.  I have not read about this anywhere else and have not been able to figure out how to fix it.

Comments are welcome!

iPod Nano (1st generation) skips songs

This is driving me crazy! My iPod Nano keeps ending up skipping songs when they are in the playlist or it starts the song and skips to the next song a few seconds in. I have been able to fix it temporarily by removing the song from the iPod and readding it, but it keeps happening. It happens with different songs, not the same songs each time.

I’ve tried doing a Windows CHKDSK, but that didn’t fix anything.

Here is Apple’s advice, which I don’t like. I’ve done a few total resets, but the problem keeps reoccurring.

.I’ll keep this updated with my status!

UPDATE: A week or so ago, I synched my nano and it became blank again!  I plugged it back in, after a day without my iPod, and it said it was corrupt and to wipe it and start clean.  This changes my Podcast settings and the custom Menu on my iPod again…  I haven’t listened to many music tracks after that, but at least one of the songs skipped.  I’ll troubleshoot again sometime soon!

UPDATE 8/21/08: Boy is this frustrating.  It just keeps corrupting on me.  I’m thinking now that maybe a files or files that are corrupted get on the iPod and give it trouble.  I’m going to try to re-rip some of my media.

[UPDATE 9/2010] I think this is probably something wrong with the Nano itself, as I switched to an identical one using the same computer and I stopped having these problems.

Recommended Products

I recommend, sell, and install the products listed below:

Dell computers and monitors

I highly recommend Dell’s products, particularly their business lines of laptops and desktops. Their ProSupport is the best tech support in the business — I highly recommend it for small businesses. I especially recommend their Latitude laptops and Optiplex desktops. I can help you configure what you need!

ESET Endpoint Security and NOD32 Antivirus

My current recommendation is ESET’s antivirus products.  It has been successful for my users in preventing most infections so far.  ESET is a great balance of effectiveness, simplicity and light use of resources.

Carbonite online backup

Because of its value and simplicity, I have been recommending Carbonite for home and business. I do sell it directly to my customers.

I personally use and highly recommend these services:

Toodledo – a to do list web application

LogMeIn – remotely use your computer from another computer or your iPhone!

Apple iPhone/iPad

My Philosophy

My philosophy of troubleshooting, installing and fixing computers is based on years of figuring out on my own what works and what doesn’t work.

Because of my own self-education, I am generally skeptical of conventional wisdom and the methods of most phone tech support providers.  I seldom need to reformat a computer and start over because of my deep experience in fixing problems, digging deeply to fix the root cause of a problem, not just fixing symptoms.

I am so confident in my ability to solve problems that if I cannot fix your problem, I will not charge you for my time.

I also strive to leave you with a system than can be supported by anyone else in a very standard way, so you are not handcuffed.
